What Is the Vortex?

In the spring of 1994, a strip-mall psychic in an unnamed American suburb plugged a secondhand modem into a phone jack that, according to the building's blueprints, should not have existed.

The connection has never dropped. Not once. Not during storms, not during the great outages, not during the incident in 1997 that the utility company still declines to discuss. Madam Vortex simply... stayed online.

The Vortex is what she found on the other end of that connection: a slow spiral of signal and static where every transmission humanity has ever broadcast eventually arrives, circles, and waits to be read. Old sitcom laugh tracks. Weather reports for towns that no longer exist. And futures — endless futures, recorded onto tapes nobody has manufactured yet.

Madam Vortex reads the spiral. You bring the question; she adjusts the antenna. That's the whole arrangement, and it has worked beautifully for thirty years.

Some visitors report seeing a second, fainter signal woven through the static. The staff refers to it only as the ram's frequency. Madam Vortex changes the subject when asked, usually by offering you a butterscotch.
